While in his freshman year of high school, James joined the Cadet Program of the US Air Force Auxiliary of Civil Air Patrol, which he would continue serving with throughout his high school, undergraduate, and graduate school years. During many of his summer months, James traveled outside Virginia, as well as outside the US, volunteering at a number of Christian youth camps and taking part in a several twinning organisation voyages to Northern France and Southern England.
Following the completion of his graduate work at Hollins University, James married his girlfriend of seven years and "second most precious gift" Miss Ashley Hartman, on July 7, 2007. James and Ashley were married in Hollins' DuPont Chapel in the presence of 500 of their friends and family members, in what many described as a "beautiful" and "royal" event.
